What is NV2 Security Clearance?

An NV2 (Negative Vetting Level 2) security clearance allows individuals to access highly sensitive government information classified up to the TOP SECRET level. This clearance is critical for roles requiring access to information that directly impacts national security.

Why Is NV2 Clearance Necessary?

For positions involving significant national security responsibilities, NV2 clearance is essential. It ensures that individuals trusted with sensitive information meet strict vetting requirements. This clearance is common for senior roles in federal agencies, defence, and other authorised organisations handling sensitive data.

NV2 Clearance Process

The NV2 clearance process, managed by the Australian Government Security Vetting Agency (AGSVA), includes:

  • Application Submission: Candidates provide detailed personal information, covering employment and residential history for the last ten years, or since age 16 if younger.
  • Vetting Assessments: This includes background checks, financial assessments, security interviews, and character evaluations. AGSVA may also contact referees and conduct additional interviews to verify details.

How Long Does It Take?

The NV2 clearance process can take around five to six months, though timelines vary based on the complexity of an individual’s background and AGSVA’s workload. Planning ahead is advisable, as the process is comprehensive.

What Does it Cost?

Info
For 2023-2024, the AGSVA fee for an NV2 clearance is AUD 2,486 (inclusive of GST). This fee is the responsibility of the applicant and is payable upon clearance approval. Employers may choose to cover this cost for their employees, but sponsoring entities do not cover clearance fees.

How Long is NV2 Clearance Valid?

An NV2 clearance is typically valid for 5 to 7 years before revalidation is required.
This ensures that the clearance holder remains eligible and suited for access to highly sensitive information over time.

Post-Clearance Obligations

Once granted, your NV2 clearance allows you to work in roles requiring access to top-level classified information. To maintain eligibility, you must report any significant changes in personal circumstances (such as changes in financial status, residency, or relationships) to AGSVA.
